How CELPIP Writing Is Scored and the Mistakes That Cost You Points
Learn the four CELPIP Writing scoring criteria and the most common errors that lower scores, so you can write smarter emails and survey responses.
- 1.Address every bullet point in the prompt fully — missing a required content point caps your Content/Coherence score no matter how good your grammar is.
- 2.Plan for 3-5 minutes and aim for 150-200 words; padding past 200 words adds errors without raising your score.
- 3.Use clear paragraphs with transition words (First, However, In addition) so the rater sees logical organization at a glance.
- 4.Match your tone to the task: formal for a complaint to a manager, friendly for an email to a friend, and consistent throughout.
- 5.Vary your vocabulary and sentence structure instead of repeating the prompt's exact words, which raters notice and penalize.
- 6.Save 3-4 minutes to proofread for verb tense, articles, plurals, and spelling — small repeated errors add up fast.
The Four Things Raters Score
CELPIP Writing has two tasks: Task 1 (Writing an Email, ~27 min, 150-200 words) and Task 2 (Responding to Survey Questions, ~26 min, 150-200 words). Both are scored on the CLB scale (up to 12) using four equally weighted criteria: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, and Task Fulfillment. Raters read holistically, so a strong response needs balance — brilliant vocabulary cannot rescue a message that ignores a required point.
Content/Coherence and Task Fulfillment
These two criteria reward answering the whole prompt clearly. Task 1 emails usually list three things you must do (for example: explain a problem, request a refund, suggest a solution). Cover all three. Task 2 asks you to choose an option and support it; pick one side and defend it with specific reasons and examples. Coherence means your ideas connect logically with transitions and stay on topic.
Vocabulary and Readability
Vocabulary measures range and accuracy — use precise, varied words suited to the situation. Readability covers grammar, sentence variety, punctuation, and paragraphing. You don't need rare words; you need correct, clear ones. Short error-free sentences beat long broken ones.
The Most Common Mistakes
- Ignoring a bullet point. This is the single biggest score-killer; a checklist before you write prevents it.
- Wrong tone. Writing casually to a company, or stiffly to a friend, lowers Task Fulfillment.
- Copying the prompt. Repeating the question's wording signals limited vocabulary.
- Going overboard on length. More than 200 words usually means more mistakes, not more points.
- No paragraphs. A wall of text hurts Readability — use a greeting, 2-3 body paragraphs, and a closing.
- Skipping proofreading. Repeated errors with articles (a/the), plurals, and verb tenses pull down your band.
A Simple Plan
Spend ~4 minutes planning, ~18 writing, ~4 proofreading. Outline your points, write in clear paragraphs, then reread once for content and once for grammar. Consistency and clarity, not complexity, earn the higher CLB scores.
