CELPIP for Canada
CELPIP is Canada’s home-grown English test — and it is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for far more than Express Entry. You can use it to prove your English for permanent residence through many streams, for the post-graduation work permit, for Canadian citizenship, and for professional designation. Which CELPIP test do you need?
There are two versions, and the program decides which one you take:
- CELPIP-General — all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). This is the test for permanent residence, the PGWP, professional designation, and study or work.
- CELPIP-General LS — Listening and Speaking only, about 70 minutes. This is the version IRCC designates for Canadian citizenship.
Whichever you take, remember the golden rule: your CELPIP level equals your CLB level, one to one.
CELPIP for permanent residence
Most economic PR programs accept CELPIP-General. The minimum CLB depends on the program and the job’s skill level:

CELPIP for Canadian citizenship
Applicants aged 18 to 54 must prove English (or French) at CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking. The test designated for this is the shorter, cheaper CELPIP-General LS — you do not need to sit Reading and Writing. Full details and tips are on our CELPIP for citizenship guide.
CELPIP for the post-graduation work permit (PGWP)

Professional designation, study and work
Beyond immigration, many Canadian regulatory and professional bodies accept CELPIP-General as proof of English for licensing or registration, and some colleges, universities and employers accept it for admission or hiring. The level required is set by each organisation — confirm it directly with the body you are applying to.
How CELPIP scores work

Frequently asked questions
Is CELPIP only for Express Entry?
No. Express Entry is the best-known use, but IRCC accepts CELPIP across many programs: provincial nominee streams (PNP), the Atlantic Immigration Program, the Home Care Worker pilots, the Start-up Visa, the post-graduation work permit (PGWP), and Canadian citizenship. Professional and regulatory bodies accept it too.
Which CELPIP test do I need for Canada?
For almost everything — permanent residence, the PGWP, professional designation and study or work — you take the full CELPIP-General (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). The only exception is Canadian citizenship, which uses the shorter CELPIP-General LS (Listening and Speaking only).
What CELPIP score do I need to immigrate to Canada?
It depends on the program. Common minimums are CLB 7 for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and university-level PGWP, CLB 5 for many Canadian Experience Class, college-level PGWP, Atlantic and Start-up Visa applicants, and CLB 4 for the Home Care Worker pilots and for citizenship. Because CELPIP maps 1:1 to the CLB, a CELPIP level of 7 is CLB 7.
Does CELPIP work for citizenship and for PR?
Yes, but with different tests. For permanent residence you use CELPIP-General; for citizenship you use CELPIP-General LS. If you are pursuing PR now and citizenship later, you will take the General test first and, years later, the shorter LS test for citizenship.
How long are CELPIP results valid?
CELPIP results are valid for two years from the date they are issued, and must still be valid on the day you submit your immigration or citizenship application.
Is CELPIP accepted in every province?
Yes. CELPIP is accepted by IRCC nationally and by all provinces and territories for their Provincial Nominee Program streams, as well as for the Atlantic Immigration Program in the Atlantic provinces. The exact CLB minimum depends on the specific stream and job.
