CELPIP vs IELTS: which test should you take?
CELPIP and IELTS General Training are both accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residence, and both map to the same CLB scale. The right choice comes down to format, your strengths, availability and cost. Here is a clear, side-by-side comparison for 2026 — including a CELPIP-to-IELTS score conversion table.
The short answer
IRCC's Express Entry list names both CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training, and no official source says that either test is easier than the other. What does differ is checkable: how the test is delivered, how long it is, when results arrive, which programs list it, and what it costs in your currency. All of that is in the tables below, each cell with its source. Format: how the two tests differ
CELPIP is delivered entirely on a computer in a single sitting of about three hours. You type your Writing answers, and for Speaking you record your responses into a microphone — there is no human examiner in the room. IELTS General Training is taken at a test centre, and its Speaking section lasts 11–14 minutes (ielts.org); IDP Canada says it no longer offers IELTS on paper. The Listening section mixes British, Australian and other accents. Some candidates thrive in a live conversation; others find it adds pressure.
Scoring: CLB is what really counts
IRCC does not use your raw CELPIP level or IELTS band directly — it uses your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). CELPIP is reported on the same 1–12 scale as the CLB, so CELPIP 9 simply equals CLB 9. IELTS bands are converted to CLB using an official chart that differs by skill. Because both end up on the same scale, a CLB 9 from CELPIP and a CLB 9 from IELTS earn exactly the same Express Entry points.
CELPIP to IELTS score conversion
Both tests map to the CLB, so you can line them up level by level. The table shows the minimum IELTS General Training band that equals each CELPIP/CLB level in every skill (official IRCC equivalency). You need to hit the band in each skill, not just on average.

Is CELPIP easier than IELTS? What the official pages say
No official source rates one of these tests as easier than the other: not IRCC, not Paragon, not ielts.org or its providers. What the official pages do give you are differences you can check, set out in the two tables above: how each test is delivered, how long each section is, when results arrive, which immigration programs list it and what it costs. Those describe the tests; they do not say which one a particular person will find easier. Cost and availability
CELPIP-General costs CA$299 plus tax in Canada (Paragon, checked 11 October 2026); see our full CELPIP test fees breakdown. On IDP Canada's booking pages IELTS sessions are listed at CAD 379 in Toronto, CAD 379 and 389 in Vancouver, CAD 359 and 369 in Calgary (read 11 October 2026), so on those pages CELPIP-General is the lower figure. Other IELTS providers in Canada were not read. Both tests are available outside Canada, through different providers: check each one's session list if you are applying from abroad.
How to choose
Take a short practice section of each if you can. Choose CELPIP if you want Canadian English, computer-based Speaking and a single sitting. Choose IELTS if you need to test outside Canada or prefer a live speaking interview. Whichever you pick, your target is the same: the highest CLB you can reach across all four skills, since immigration uses your lowest skill. Not sure what you need? Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?
No official source says so. IRCC, Paragon (CELPIP), ielts.org and the IELTS providers (IDP, the British Council) do not rate either test as easier or harder than the other, and we do not either. What the official pages do state, checked 11 October 2026: IRCC's Express Entry list names both CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training; the Australian Department of Home Affairs lists both for tests taken at a secure test centre; the GOV.UK SELT list names neither CELPIP nor TOEFL. CELPIP-General is computer-delivered, in one sitting, at a test centre (celpip.ca); ielts.org lists IELTS on computer, with results in 1–5 days, and IELTS Online, with results in 6–8 days. What IELTS score is equal to CELPIP 9?
CELPIP 9 equals CLB 9. On IELTS General Training, CLB 9 is Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0 — you need the minimum band in each skill. See the conversion table above, or our full CELPIP score chart, for every level.
Do CELPIP and IELTS give the same CLB level?
Both convert to the same Canadian Language Benchmarks scale that IRCC uses, so a given CLB level counts identically for Express Entry no matter which test you took. Only the route to that CLB differs.
Is CELPIP cheaper than IELTS?
On the official pages we read, yes: Paragon's overview page lists CELPIP-General at CA$299 plus taxes, and IDP Canada's booking pages list CAD 379 in Toronto, CAD 379 and 389 in Vancouver, CAD 359 and 369 in Calgary. IDP's Vancouver and Calgary pages show two price levels for sessions that look alike, and no page we read says why; other IELTS providers in Canada were not read. Tax wording differs: Paragon prints "+ Taxes", the IDP pages we read print none. Pick the test you will score higher on.
Which test gives results faster?
They are close. Paragon's Results page says CELPIP scores are online in 2-4 business days (its country-page FAQ says 3-4); ielts.org says IELTS on computer takes 1–5 days and IELTS Online 6–8 days. On a tight deadline, check the provider's current page for your session.
Which test should I take for Express Entry?
IRCC's Express Entry language-test list names both CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training, so either can be used; the list does not say which to choose. Choose the one you will score higher on, with a session available near you at a fee you can pay. Can I use IELTS Academic for Canadian PR?
No. For permanent residence you need IELTS General Training, not IELTS Academic. CELPIP-General is the equivalent CELPIP test for immigration.
Is CELPIP only available in Canada?
No. celpip.ca lists CELPIP sessions in many countries; our fee pages for India, Nigeria and Australia show what its session tables list there. IELTS is delivered by several providers, each with its own sessions. If you are testing outside Canada, check both providers' session lists before choosing.
