Test Day: What to Expect and Tips for the Computer-Delivered CELPIP
A practical walkthrough of CELPIP test day — from check-in and equipment to managing each section — so you arrive calm, prepared, and ready to perform.

Before You Go
CELPIP is delivered fully on a computer at an official test centre. Bring valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID — the name must match your registration. Arrive at least 45 minutes early; latecomers are turned away. Lockers are provided for personal items, including phones and watches. The centre supplies a headset, microphone, and note-taking materials, so you don't need to bring your own.
How the Test Flows
You'll complete all four skills in one sitting, in this order: Listening (47–55 min), Reading (55–60 min), Writing (53 min), and Speaking (15–20 min). The whole session takes about three hours. Listening and Reading include unscored trial items mixed in — you won't know which, so treat every question seriously.
During Listening and Reading
In Listening, the audio plays once only. Jot quick notes, focus on the speaker's purpose, and move on if you're unsure — dwelling costs you the next question. Parts range from Problem Solving (8 Q) to Viewpoints (6 Q). In Reading, watch the on-screen timer across the four parts, especially Part 2 (Reading to Apply a Diagram) and Part 4 (Reading for Viewpoints), where careful matching matters.
During Writing and Speaking
Writing has two tasks: an email (~27 min, 150–200 words) and responding to survey questions (~26 min, 150–200 words). Use the built-in word counter and leave two minutes to proofread. Copy and paste are available, so draft and edit efficiently.
Speaking has eight tasks, each with 30–60 seconds of prep and 60–90 seconds of speaking. A countdown shows when recording begins — start promptly and keep talking until time ends. If you stumble, simply continue; self-correction is natural and won't sink your score.
Mindset Tips
Wear comfortable layers, hydrate beforehand, and use the washroom early. Take a slow breath before each section. Confidence and steady pacing matter as much as vocabulary — trust your preparation and keep moving forward.
