Why Speed and Accuracy Both Matter
The CELPIP Reading test gives you 55–60 minutes to answer 38 questions across four parts: Reading Correspondence (11 Q), Reading to Apply a Diagram (8 Q), Reading for Information (9 Q), and Reading for Viewpoints (10 Q). That is roughly a minute per question, so reading every word slowly will cost you. Skimming and scanning let you cover more text in less time while still finding correct answers.
Skimming: Get the Big Picture
Skimming means reading quickly to understand the overall idea. Spend 20-30 seconds moving your eyes across the text. Read the first and last sentences of each paragraph, note headings, and identify the writer's purpose and tone. In Part 1 (Correspondence), ask: Who wrote this, to whom, and why? In Part 4 (Viewpoints), notice whether the writer agrees, disagrees, or stays neutral. A quick skim builds a mental map so you know where information lives.
Scanning: Hunt for Specific Details
Scanning means searching for one piece of information without reading everything. After you read a question, pick out keywords, then sweep the passage for matching words or related ideas. Names, dates, numbers, and capitalized terms are easy to spot. When you find the target area, slow down and read those one or two sentences carefully to confirm the answer.
Beware of Paraphrasing
CELPIP rarely copies wording from the passage into the correct answer. If the text says "the store will close earlier," the right option might read "reduced operating hours." Match meaning, not vocabulary. Distractors often reuse exact words to trap fast readers, so confirm with the passage before choosing.
Putting It Together
Use this order: skim the passage, read a question, scan for the keyword, then read closely to verify. Predict the answer before looking at the options. If a question stalls you, mark it, move on, and come back. Practising this routine until it feels automatic is the fastest way to finish on time without losing accuracy.
