Past Tenses — Telling Your Story

Past simple, past continuous and past perfect — the tools for narrating a personal experience clearly (CELPIP Speaking Task 2).

Key strategies
  • 1.Past simple = the main, finished events in order: "I arrived, I paid, I left."
  • 2.Past continuous (was/were + -ing) = the background action that was already in progress: "I was cooking when the phone rang."
  • 3.Past perfect (had + participle) = an earlier past, before another past event: "The train had left before I arrived."
  • 4.Watch irregular verbs: go-went, see-saw, buy-bought, take-took. These are tested by ear in Speaking.

The three pasts work together

When you tell a story, you usually need all three:

  • Past simple carries the main events, in order: "I woke up late, missed the bus, and walked to work."
  • Past continuous sets the scene or shows an action interrupted: "I was walking to work when it started to rain."
  • Past perfect marks something that happened even earlier: "By the time I got there, the meeting had already finished."

The classic pattern

A very natural storytelling structure combines two of them:

"I was waiting for the bus when I realised I had left my wallet at home."

  • was waiting = background (past continuous)
  • realised = the main event (past simple)
  • had left = the earlier action (past perfect)

Irregular verbs

The past simple of regular verbs adds -ed (work → worked). But many common verbs are irregular and must be learned: go → went, see → saw, buy → bought, take → took, think → thought, come → came. Getting these wrong ("I goed", "I buyed") is very noticeable.

CELPIP application

Speaking Task 2 (Personal Experience) is a past-tense task. A clear story that stays in the past, uses past continuous for the scene, and gets irregular verbs right reads as controlled and confident.

Check yourself

A quick self-check on this lesson — pick an answer, then see the explanation. Not graded.

1. Choose the correct past form: "Last year I ___ to Vancouver."
2. "I ___ dinner when the guests arrived." (background action)
3. "When I got to the station, the train ___ already ___."
4. Which is the correct irregular past of "buy"?
