Countable & Uncountable Nouns + Quantifiers

Why "informations" and "many money" are wrong, and how to choose much/many, few/little, some/any correctly.

Key strategies
  • 1.Countable nouns have a plural (one book, two books). Uncountable nouns do not (information, advice, money, water).
  • 2.Never add -s to uncountables: say "information" and "advice", never "informations" or "advices".
  • 3.Use many / few with countables, much / little with uncountables: "many people", "much time".
  • 4.some for positive statements, any for questions and negatives: "I have some time." / "Do you have any time?"

Two kinds of noun

  • Countable — things you can count; they have singular and plural forms: a chair / three chairs, an idea / ideas.
  • Uncountable — masses, substances, or abstract ideas with no plural: water, rice, money, information, advice, furniture, news.

A very common error is making uncountables plural:

"He gave me some advices and useful informations.""He gave me some advice and useful information."

Quantifiers: match the noun type

CountableUncountable
large amountmanymuch
small amounta fewa little
zero (negative)fewlittle

"There were many people but much confusion." "I have a few questions and a little time."

some vs. any

  • some — positive statements and offers/requests: "I bought some bread." "Would you like some water?"
  • any — questions and negatives: "Is there any milk?" "I do not have any cash."

CELPIP application

These nouns appear in everyday Writing and Speaking topics (giving advice, describing problems). Saying "much information" and "a few suggestions" correctly is a small detail that signals solid control to the rater.
