What the latest Express Entry cutoff means for your CELPIP (CLB) target
Every Express Entry round has a cutoff score, and your CELPIP result — converted to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level — is one of the biggest levers you control to reach it.

- 1.Check the table below to see the most recent cutoff before you pick a CELPIP target.
- 2.Aim for the CELPIP result that lifts your CLB level, not just a "pass" — a full CLB step up can move your CRS score meaningfully.
- 3.If a recent round was category-based (see the table below), confirm whether that category has its own language threshold before assuming the general cutoff applies to you.
- 4.Book your CELPIP test with a buffer above your current CLB level, since scores can vary slightly between sittings.
A draw cutoff is the lowest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score among candidates invited to apply for permanent residence in a given Express Entry round. IRCC ranks every profile in the pool and invites from the top down, so the cutoff simply reflects how competitive that pool was on that day. Language ability is one of the largest single factors in your CRS score, so raising your CLB level — even by one step — can move you from below a recent cutoff to above it.

What the cutoff means for choosing a CELPIP target
Look at the table above and compare recent cutoffs to your own estimated CRS score. If your score currently falls short, ask which factors you can realistically change quickly — for many candidates, language is the fastest one, because CELPIP results are converted directly to CLB levels, and each CLB level has its own point value in the CRS. Rather than aiming for "a good score," aim for the CELPIP result that pushes you into the next CLB level, since CRS points are awarded in CLB bands, not on a smooth scale.
How language ability counts in the CRS
IRCC's CRS criteria award points for each of the four abilities — speaking, listening, reading, and writing — in your first official language, plus additional points for a second official language if you have one. Points increase as your CLB level rises, and the jump between consecutive CLB levels is not always the same size; some steps are worth more than others. Because language touches multiple parts of the CRS grid, including core human capital points and, for some candidates, skills-transferability combinations with education or work experience, a stronger CELPIP result can raise your total score in more than one place at once. For the exact point values at each CLB level, see IRCC's official CRS criteria page linked below rather than relying on this page's wording.
Category-based rounds and language
Some rounds are category-based rather than general, and IRCC has run categories tied specifically to French-language proficiency. If a recent round in the table above was category-based, check whether it required a particular CLB level in French, English, or both — that requirement can sit alongside, or separate from, the general cutoff. Always confirm which round type applies to your situation before assuming a single cutoff tells the whole story.
What to do next
Compare your current CLB level to the cutoffs in the table above, identify whether the next CLB level is within reach, and confirm the exact points involved on IRCC's official CRS criteria page before booking a test.
