Key strategies
  • 1.Memorize the prep and response times for each task type so the on-screen timer never surprises you on test day.
  • 2.Use your 30–60 second prep to jot three bullet points—not full sentences—so you can speak fluently instead of reading.
  • 3.Open every response within the first 5 seconds with a clear topic sentence to avoid wasting your speaking window.
  • 4.Practice with a visible countdown timer at home until your natural pacing matches the 60–90 second limit.
  • 5.Aim to still be speaking at the buzzer; an abrupt cut-off scores better than 20 seconds of dead air.
  • 6.Drill transition phrases so you can stretch or compress your answer in real time depending on the clock.

Why Timing Decides Your Score

The CELPIP Speaking test has 8 tasks delivered in about 15–20 minutes. Each task gives you a short prep window (30–60 seconds) and a fixed speaking window (60–90 seconds). The microphone records automatically, and the timer does not pause. If you freeze, hesitate, or run out of ideas, those silent seconds are lost forever. Strong pacing is therefore just as important as strong vocabulary.

Know Your Two Clocks

Every task has two timers: prep and response. During prep, your goal is not to write a script—there is not enough time. Instead, jot down three keywords or a simple structure (point, reason, example). During the response, your goal is to keep talking smoothly until the timer ends. Aim to finish a final thought right as the buzzer sounds rather than stopping early.

The 5-Second Launch

Many test-takers waste 10–15 seconds searching for a first sentence. Train yourself to launch within 5 seconds using a ready-made opener. For Task 1 (Giving Advice): "If I were you, I would…" For Task 2 (Personal Experience): "One time that really stands out is…" For Task 7 (Opinions): "In my opinion…" A fast start buys you valuable seconds for development.

Pacing Drills to Practice

  1. The Countdown Drill: Set a visible 60- or 90-second timer and answer practice prompts daily. Stop only when it buzzes. This calibrates your internal clock.

  2. The Three-Bullet Drill: Give yourself just 30 seconds to write three bullets, then speak. This mirrors test conditions and trains efficient prep.

  3. The Stretch-and-Compress Drill: If you finish too early, add an example. If you are running long, use a wrap-up line like "So overall, that's why I feel this way." Practice both moves.

Finish Strong

Never stop with 20 seconds left. Keep developing your example or add a brief conclusion. A response that fills the window confidently always outscores a short, hesitant one.
